Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is considering a pivotal decision that could reshape the future of animals used in research. On February 9, 2026, OHSU’s Board of Directors will vote on whether to enter negotiations with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to explore transitioning the Oregon National Primate Research Center into a primate sanctuary—reflecting a growing shift away from nonhuman primate experimentation and toward modern, human-based science.

AB 1382 Passes Assembly Judiciary Committee

AB 1382, the Ethics Over Aesthetics Act, authored by Assemblywoman Leticia Castillo (R-Corona) and sponsored by political animal advocacy group, Social Compassion in Legislation (SCIL), passed the Assembly Judiciary Committee with a unanimous vote of 12-0. Earlier in the week it passed the Assembly Business and Professions Committee with a vote of 17-0.

AB 1382 Unanimously Passes Assembly Business & Professions Committee

AB 1382, the Ethics Over Aesthetics Act, authored by Assemblywoman Leticia Castillo (R-Corona) and sponsored by political animal advocacy group, Social Compassion in Legislation (SCIL), passed the Assembly Business and Professions Committee with a unanimous vote. The bill will prohibit the sale of animals that have been genetically modified for cosmetic purposes.
